Women and the Law: Researcher’s Tools

Once an article is selected in any of the search tabs, Peggy has a number of functions to make research easier and more user friendly. The functions are highlighted in a red box below. The functions include the ability to download a PDF version of the article, print option, email option, permanent link to the page, bookmark the article, and the ability to go through the document page by page.

Once an article is selected at depicted above, there is a tool that gives you the cite of the article in MLA, APA, Chicago, and Bluebook form.

Click on the button “Cite” and a textbox with the citation forms will appear.

Lastly, on the left side of the page when an article has been selected it shows the reader a “Table of Contents” which can be selected to divide up the article into a particular section that may interest the reader. peggy-10

Subject Compilations of State Laws Now Available in HeinOnline

http://www.heinonline.org/HOL/Welcome 

According to the W.S. Hein website, this HeinOnline library “features a database giving you access to bibliographic records from Cheryl Nyberg’s Subject Compilations Bibliography Series. Many records contain extensive annotations with links directly to articles and other documents residing in HeinOnline. In addition to a searchable database, HeinOnline also includes the exact replicas of the original bound volumes.”

You are able to browse the materials in two different ways.  You can browse the list of subjects that are contained in the database and you are able to browse the actual volumes that have been published since the first volume was published in 1981.

If browsing isn’t your preferred method, then you can also make use of the various searching methods provided such as Keyword, Title, Subject and even Cases or Court.

Women and the Law (Peggy): Featured Tabs

Peggy has many unique tabs on the home page that connects researchers with a number topics relating to Women and the Law. One of which includes famous women biographies and articles relating to the topics of “American Feminists”, “Famous Ladies of the English Court”, “Noted Negro Women: Their Triumphs and Activities”, and the list continues.

Additionally, Peggy has a tab featuring articles on Abortion. This tab includes articles entitled “Abortion: Justice O’Connor’s Opinions”, “Law, Ethics, and Reproductive Choice”, and “Supreme Court to Review Texas Abortion Case.”

At the top of the home page on Peggy there is a tab that directs researchers to “External Links” which include web pages that have similar topics focused on women’s issues and the law. These “External Links” can take the researcher to 19 different web pages, which includes a link to a “Timeline of Major Supreme Court Decisions on Women’s Rights.”https://www.aclu.org/files/images/asset_upload_file420_24353.pdf

Women and the Law (Peggy): What is it?

This is the first of four blog posts spotlighting http://heinonline.org/HOL/Index?collection=peggy&set_as_cursor=clear

Women and the Law (Peggy) is a collection uniting books, biographies and periodicals dedicated to the role of women in society and the law. Notable works included in this library are History of Women Sufferarge (1881-1922), the complete Feminism and Legal Theory Project, and the Documentary History of the Legal Aspects of Abortion series. Also featured are other works on abortion, biographies of famous women, works pertaining to legal rights and suffrage, and books and journals that pertain to the role of women in education and employment.Peggy 1.PNG

This unique collection of materials provides a convenient platform for users to research the progression of women’s roles and rights in society over the past 200 years.

A nice feature of Peggy is the ability to search the web page though a search bar by “Full Text”, “Citation”, “Catalog”, or by “Case Law.” This feature allows for a faster and in-depth search of a particular topic or article.Over the last sixteen years HeinOnline has grown from a single law journal collection of 25 titles to a digital archive with more than 60 distinct collections containing over 131 million pages, more than 100,000 titles, and 237,000 volumes.

Peggy also lists “All Titles” for a more thorough search of the web page. Under “All Titles” the article name and author is listed in alphabetical order.

Bloomberg BNA Banking Report: Bloomberg Law Insights

This is the fourth in a four blog post series spotlighting  http://www.bna.com/

Bloomberg/BNA’s Banking Report includes “Bloomberg Law Insights.” Insights are short scholarly articles providing perspectives on varying family law issues from experts in the field. They may be accessed from the main page by selecting “All Bloomberg Law Insights” under the “Bloomberg Law Insights” section.

Under “Bloomberg Law Insights” you can get to know the authors of the articles most recently posted on the Banking Report. Most have a photo of the author and a background segment on how they are influenced by this particular area of the law. This extensive background also details more information in regards to the particular area of the law that is being researched.

At the bottom of each full background article for a particular author will have a table for “Related Articles” which is divided by “Topics,” “Agencies,” “Federal Statutes,” and “Law Firms.” If you wanted to research the firm that the particular author works at is will be located un the “Law Firms” tab. As an alternative, if you were interested in other articles similar to the one this particular author wrote you will find a list under “Topics.”
